Intense storms hit Portugal and Spain.

Portugal and Spain have been battered by a veritable “train” of successive storms. According to meteorologists, the cause lies in a polar jet stream shifted further south than usual, combined with a weaker Azores High, unable to divert these low-pressure systems.

Among the most intense storms to hit our territory are “Ingrid”, “Joseph” and, subsequently, “Kristin”. The latter caused wind gusts close to 200 km/h, especially in the Leiria region, and was responsible for nine deaths. Some occurred indirectly, such as the case of a 63-year-old man who, while repairing his roof after the storm, ended up falling.

According to available data, storm “Kristin” ranks among the most severe of the last century. In just two days, the volume of rainfall exceeded that accumulated during previous winters — and rain is expected to continue over the coming days.

Leiria was left deeply devastated: thousands of hectares of forest were destroyed, hundreds of homes were left without roofs, severe flooding was recorded, and around 139,000 people have remained for several days without electricity supply or communications.

Unfortunately, in moments of tragedy, human beings sometimes reveal their cruelest side. There are reports of looting of shops and damaged homes — without doors or windows — taking advantage of the vulnerability of people who have already lost almost everything.

At the same time, opportunistic behaviour has emerged: some traders are selling fuel-powered generators at inflated prices. Equipment that previously cost around €400 on the market is now being sold for values close to €1,400.

The Portuguese State declared a state of calamity, implemented some support measures and credit lines worth millions. Let us hope that assistance arrives quickly and reaches everyone in need. Link

According to SIC’s evening news, the material damage caused by storm “Kristin” is estimated at €2 billion.

Another depression is approaching Portugal, which will be called “Leonardo”.
