There is no border control whatsoever! Thousands of Indians are traveling by plane all over the world.
Nipah can cause acute respiratory infections and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). It is transmitted between humans and also from animals such as bats and pigs. Currently there is no vaccine or cure, and the lethality rate among those infected ranges from 40% to 75%.
It is a zoonotic virus, meaning a virus that can be transmitted from animals to people. The virus was discovered in 1998, but now it seems out of control again.
About 110 people were quarantined in the Indian state of West Bengal after two healthcare professionals were treated in early January after contracting the virus.
The outbreak in India has put neighboring countries on alert. Some have even intensified security measures at airports to prevent a possible spread of the virus.
Little by little, Nepal and Thailand, among others, are implementing some controls at airports, but they will not be able to track all the thousands of passengers.
