The World Health Organization updated the number of hantavirus infection cases on board the cruise ship "Hondius," anchored off the coast of Praia, Cape Verde, on Monday. There are now seven infected individuals and three fatalities. Human-to-human transmission is suspected.
"As of May 4, 2026, seven cases have been identified (two laboratory-confirmed hantavirus cases and five suspected cases), including three deaths, one patient in critical condition, and three individuals who reported mild symptoms," the WHO said on Monday.
Cape Verdean medical teams have visited the ship several times, which has been anchored at the entrance to the port of Praia since Sunday. For public health reasons, disembarkation is not permitted. On board are mainly British, American and Spanish passengers, and there is a Portuguese member of the crew who, so far, has not requested any diplomatic assistance, a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the LUSA news agency.
