The United States is sending the world's largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Caribbean Sea under the usual guise of an anti-drug operation.
The mission, decided by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, aims to strengthen the ability to "detect, control, and disrupt illicit activities that threaten the security of the Western Hemisphere."
The aircraft carrier will be accompanied by other warships, boasting an air force of approximately 90 aircraft and more than 5,000 troops.
This represents a "major escalation" in the region. The United States has carried out several attacks on vessels allegedly transporting narcotics in the Caribbean. But Washington may not stop there—it may also target Venezuela, one of the possible objectives being to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro, whom the US accuses of being the leader of the Los Soles Cartel.
The operation intensifies the US military presence in the region and heightens tensions with Venezuela, which views these maneuvers as a form of pressure or destabilization.
