Approximately 19 Russian drones invaded Polish airspace (a NATO member state) and were shot down.
The drones reportedly did not carry explosive charges, but they are the more "economical" drones used to distract countries' air defenses.
However, it is still an invasion of the airspace of a sovereign country and a clear "provocation." It was no accident, as some drones crashed far from the border with Ukraine and Poland, more than 400 km from the border, while others were sent from Belarus.
The drones were shot down with the help of NATO fighter jets, as Poland activated Article 4.
The Netherlands participated in the air operation in Poland by sending F-35 aircraft.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that some airports were closed for a few hours and flights were suspended.
In the Lublin region of eastern Poland—near the border with Ukraine—a house was hit by one of the drones, according to local mayor Bernard Blaszczuk.
In a speech to the European Parliament, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured that "Europe will defend every square inch of its territory" and called on European states to step up their defense efforts by equipping themselves with "independent strategic assets."
Trump, on his own social media account "Truth Social," responded like this:
Article 4 requires NATO member states to meet.
Any allied state can request an urgent meeting of the North Atlantic Council to assess the situation. These consultations could potentially lead to some form of joint decision or action.
