Another serious security incident temporarily shut down Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, one of Europe’s most important cargo hubs, during the night.
The presence of a drone carrying explosives near the runway forced an immediate halt to all operations, ending with a second device colliding with a DHL aircraft.
Airspace breach forces complete shutdown
The alert was raised during the night, a period of intense cargo traffic at the German airport. As soon as the first explosive‑laden drone was detected near the main runway, emergency protocols were activated, leading to the immediate suspension of all takeoffs and landings.
The initial priority for authorities was to secure the ground area and isolate the threat detected on the runway.
DHL aircraft struck by second drone
The situation escalated in the air. Unable to land due to the airspace closure, a cargo aircraft operated by logistics giant DHL was forced to circle the surrounding area.
During this holding pattern, the aircraft was struck by a second drone, highlighting the severity and apparent coordination behind the incident.
The use of drones in airport exclusion zones is one of the most serious technological and security challenges in modern aviation, especially when armed or explosive systems are involved.
Investigation underway
German security forces and criminal investigation teams are already on site collecting debris from the devices to determine their origin, technical capabilities, and who may have been responsible for the attack.
Traffic at Leipzig/Halle Airport was heavily disrupted, affecting several international cargo distribution routes.
