Tuesday's operation (28) was the deadliest in recent times.
At least 132 people died and 81 were arrested in this mega-operation by the Civil and Military Police of Rio de Janeiro against the "Comando Vermelho" (Red Command) faction in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
Among the dead are four police officers, according to information from the Civil Police. There are also reports of police officers and residents being shot.
Tuesday's operation was the deadliest ever recorded since 1990 in the Rio metropolitan area by the Group for the Study of New Illegalities of the Federal Fluminense University (Geni/UFF).
The operation involved 2,500 agents from the Rio de Janeiro security forces to carry out one hundred arrest warrants in an area of 9 million square meters.
Military police officers from the Special Operations Command (COE), battalions from the capital and the Metropolitan Region, as well as CORE teams and all specialized police stations of the Civil Police participated. According to Cláudio Castro, more than 100 rifles were seized by the Civil and Military Police during the operation. A large quantity of drugs was also confiscated, according to the state government.
The clashes between police and drug traffickers occurred mainly in wooded areas, according to the governor, but there were attempts by criminals to block roads in the region, such as Avenida Brasil.
