21 Killed in Massive Russian Strike on Kyiv

Massive Russian attack on central Kyiv damages EU and British Council buildings, leaving dozens dead and injured

In the early hours of Thursday, August 28, 2025, Kyiv was the target of a massive Russian missile and drone attack, which killed at least 21 people—including four children—and injured dozens, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The assault, described as one of the most violent since the invasion began in 2022, struck around 33 locations across all ten districts of the city, including civilian infrastructure, residential areas, and essential facilities.

Among the sites hit were the European Union mission in Kyiv and the British Council office, both damaged, prompting the European Union and the United Kingdom to summon the Russian ambassadors.

Ukrainian forces intercepted most of the aerial threats—shooting down over 563 drones and 26 of the 31 missiles—but explosions and shrapnel still damaged nearly 100 buildings, including a shopping mall and several schools.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called for tougher sanctions and greater diplomatic pressure, stating that the attack marked a violent escalation and underscored Russia’s disregard for peace negotiations.
