Do you remember the risks of AI and the movie “Terminator”?
Elon Musk will be co‑leader of a Pentagon AI project about the future of warfare.
The project aims to study the “future of war” and the use of Artificial Intelligence in conflicts. It marks a renewed rapprochement after disagreements with Trump and a deeper involvement in the military industry.
Elon Musk will be one of three leaders of a Pentagon project focused on studying Artificial Intelligence in the world of warfare.
The announcement was made by Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, who said the project will include leaders from industry and technology “thinkers”.
“Today I announce Project Meridian, an effort led by the best minds in the United States to study the future of war,” he said during a speech to the troops at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia.
“Project Meridian will be co‑led by three of the greatest minds of our nation: Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich,” he added.
This announcement represents a renewed rapprochement between Elon Musk and the U.S. administration after last year’s disagreements with Trump, as well as a greater involvement of the billionaire in the defense industry.
In July 2025, the Pentagon and Musk’s company xAI signed a contract for the use of the Grok chatbot by federal agencies and municipalities, as well as in national security operations. The agreement was later expanded in February this year to include classified matters. In addition, Starlink and Starshield technologies — SpaceX services for military missions — have been used by governments such as the United Kingdom and Ukraine.
