A man opened fire in a public area on Friday morning in Trappes and La Verrière, France. The shooting left at least one person dead and four injured, according to French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.
The shots were fired at around 10:30 a.m., BMF reports, when the suspect, who was travelling in a vehicle, began shooting in public areas in the two towns.
The man, who was arrested in Coignières and placed in police custody, has been identified as Kevin T., aged 39.
Regarding the victims, it is known that the fatality was a 26-year-old man and that one of the injured is a 12-year-old girl.
The possibility of a terrorist attack is being considered. France's National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has opened a preliminary investigation into "murder" and "attempted murder" in connection with a terrorist organisation, "with the aggravating circumstance that the acts were committed because of actual or presumed membership of a particular race, ethnicity, nationality or religion".
The investigation also covers "possession of a Category A weapon" and "terrorist conspiracy with the aim of preparing crimes against persons".
