UN Alert - El Niño will last for months

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) are warning of potentially "deadly" weeks across Europe, with southern Europe expected to reach temperatures of up to 43°C (109°F). The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) forecasts that this summer could break historical records, with recent heatwaves already causing more than 4,000 premature deaths in Western Europe.

El Niño conditions have now become established in the Tropical Pacific and are expected to rapidly develop into a strong event over the coming months. As a result, the likelihood of heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, and other extreme weather events is increasing in many parts of the world, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

According to the agency's Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo, the WMO community has launched an unprecedented mobilization to coordinate actions across the United Nations system and at the regional level. This includes support for governments, humanitarian organizations, climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture and health, and vulnerable populations to prepare for the potential impacts.

According to the latest WMO Global Climate Bulletin, a strong El Niño event is forecast between this July and September.

El Niño is expected to continue strengthening throughout the Northern Hemisphere autumn, influencing weather patterns across many regions of the world. At the same time, the equatorial Atlantic Ocean basin is expected to remain generally warmer than average.
