At the same time that Israeli forces began occupying Gaza City, Israel approved a controversial expansion plan to build more neighborhoods in the West Bank. This plan has already been condemned by the UN, which has again called for a ceasefire.
The plan, frozen for decades by international pressure, has now received final approval.
Israel truly wants to move forward with the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank. The project calls for the construction of more than 3,400 homes in the area known as "E1," a strategic area east of Jerusalem inhabited by several Palestinian Bedouin communities.
Several human rights groups fear that if the plan moves forward, any hope of creating a Palestinian state will be dashed.
The UN Secretary-General also criticized the decision and called on Israel to reverse it. Guterres also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
These statements came after the Israeli army announced that the first steps in the operation to control Gaza City had been taken.
Meanwhile, attacks on Gaza City, which Israel plans to take, are intensifying, in an operation that Israeli forces guarantee will be gradual and that should be completed by the symbolic date of October 7.
