Inaccurate reports are circulating online claiming that Area 51 is on fire in the Nevada desert.
Some speculate that it was a UFO incident. This isn't quite the case.
The fire was caused by lightning on July 4th and is near Area 51 (but not at the secret military base itself), only miles away.
The fire is occurring at the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) in Nye County, in an area where nuclear tests were being conducted, while Area 51 is located in Groom Lake, so the fire is 60 miles away.
The fires have caused destruction to local fauna and flora. The fires, in fact, have been burning since July 4th and have not yet been contained.
The U.S. Department of Defense, which is responsible for the area, is attempting to control the fires with the help of the Nevada Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). About 14,000 hectares are burning and the fire has been named "Gothic Fire" or "Gothic Fire".
