According to a Dutch study, sperm counts in men who drink more cola are, on average, 30% lower than in men who do not drink the beverage.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that men with lower sperm counts are at risk of becoming infertile.
It is not yet clear which substance in cola is responsible for the phenomenon, but it is unlikely to be caffeine, because coffee does not have the same effect on men.
Other substances associated with an unhealthy lifestyle may be involved.
According to the researchers, few studies have been done linking male infertility to caffeinated drinks, so that was the reason for the study with 2,500 Dutch men.
